John Weston Daw
1924-2007

Our beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather passed away at home, on Dec. 13, 2007 after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born July 3, 1924 in Granger, UT to Albert William Daw and Helen Rebecca Bowden. He graduated from Granite High School in 1942 and attended Utah State University. He married his sweetheart, Beverly Shepherd, on May 7th, 1947, in the Salt Lake Temple. Loved by all who knew him because of his unique ability to love them, Weston was a truly remarkable man. He was a true patriarch and a wonderful example to his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a kind grandfather, and a fun great-grandfather. Dad dedicated his life to the service of the Lord, his family and all he knew. He served as bishop of the South Cottonwood Ward for a total of 16 years and was most recently released at age 80. He served as a counselor in the Little Cottonwood Stake Presidency. He also served as president of the South Carolina, Columbia Mission from 1984-1987 and as president of the Philippines, Manila Missionary Training Center from 1993-1995. He was currently serving as the Gospel Doctrine Teacher in the South Cottonwood Ward.

Known for his love of others and inability to sit still, he was always talking with people every-where he went. Weston loved his yard and could often be seen planting, weeding, or just sitting and enjoying its beauty. He was very generous, always helping those around him in any way he could. Weston founded Daw Lathing Company later known as Daw Incorporated. He also was a founder of Daw Technologies. He was well known in the Utah Construction Industry for integrity and honesty. He served as a member of the Murray City Commission, Board Member of Cottonwood Hospital and the current president-elect of the Murray Chapter of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and family members.

Weston is survived by his sweet-heart, Beverly; his children: Karen Kammerath (Steven), Ronald Daw (Tracey), Ryan Daw (Shelly); Terry Dow (Darcy); Gordon Daw (Nanete), and daughter-in-law Leisa Brown; his brothers and sisters, Harold, Carol, Dawna, Owen and Larae: 28 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased in death by his parents; brother, Glenn Daw; and his son Ervin.

The family would like to express gratitude for the love and support extended by so many neighbors and friends, and to his nurses Crystal, Jen and Walter from LifePath.

December 18, 2007 8:17 PM Daw Family, I was sorry to hear of Westons Passing. I am sure that I can speak for a majority of the extended Daw family who at some time or other worked at Daw Inc. Because of the his gentle kind and caring nature I developed a strong love for him. That is quite unique in todays corporate world. But then again Weston was a unique man. He is someone I have the utmost respect for and have tried to emulate many of the qualities I saw in him in my own life. He was a great example to me and I feel blessed for the association I had with him. Gordon and Ryan please know that we are thinking of you and praying for you and your family at this difficult time. With Love Steve & Julie Lawson

December 18, 2007 6:00 PM Dear Aunt Beverly and Family, I was so sad to hear about uncle Weston's passing. I have many pivotal memories of him. He was my bishop when I was small. He was a member of the Stake Presidency for a large part of my growing up. I can still see and hear him speaking at stake conference and because he was my uncle and I knew him I paid particular attention to the things he said and even closer attention to how he lived his life. I was never disappointed. He gave Norm and me some wise counsel many years ago when we moved to New York; counsel that helped us grow and bloom where we were transplanted. I loved his warm smile and the twinkle in his eyes. I appreciated his approachability, and his steadfastness. Uncle Weston was the genuine article, the real deal. Norm and I loved him. Much sympathy and love.

December 17, 2007 4:47 PM I have never known a man like Him. I met him when I was working for Howard Erb and he was doing some metal framing for us, many many years ago. I worked for him occasionally and it was always a pleasure. Over the last few years we saw each other at Rite Aid. And a big smile would be on his face. We would talk about things and then go on our way. His memory will linger with me forever.Missed but not forgotten.

December 17, 2007 10:52 AM Dear Sister Daw and Family, I only had one encounter with Weston and that was 65 years ago, but I thought you might like to hear about it because it it so typical of what you say his whole life has been. I met him at the Salt Lake County Fair in 1942. I was a first time exhibitor who knew nothing. I, and my Holstein heifer, had been dropped off by a hired truck driver. I didn't know what to do. I was twiddling my thumbs when Weston pulled in with a couple of Jerseys in a trailer behind the family car. He immediately helped me figure out where to tie my heifer, told me where to get straw for bedding and otherwise helped me get settled in. He was very considerate and helpful throughout the County Fair. I looked up at him as a model of the kind of man I would like to be. I have never seen him since, but hope he wouldn't be too disappointed in how I turned out. God bless you in your temporary loss. DeVon F. Andrus, 2056 North Wedgewood Lane, Cedar City, Utah 84720.

December 16, 2007 11:06 PM My memories of J. Weston Daw go back to my childhood when he was in the Murray Utah East Stake Presidency with Boyd Bronson. I remember President Daw as being a very jovial man that really could laugh out loud!!! At the same time, I also remember him as one who had a very strong testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ and the tears freely flowed when he bore it. May the Lord's comforting spirit be his his family and friends at this time to reassure them that they will indeed see him again and that he now is doing a most important work on the other side.

When Naomi was a child, she played with the Daw children. She moved away when, in 1942, she married Ivor Pickering. Both of us, Naomi and Ivor, knowing Weston, always liked him and admired for the things he did and for the man he became. We send our sincere condolences to his wife, Beverly, and to the family. December 15, 2007 11:51 AM J. Weston Daw was certainly a great man. He was someone you could always look up to because of his integrity and compassion for others. While he was my cousin I always thought of him as an uncle. He and Beverly were very gracious in hosting the Berg family reunions in 2001, 2003 and 2005. He was always approachable and made everyone feel at ease regardless of who they were. He will be greatly missed until we join him on the other side. -Reed Haslam-

To the Family Of Bishop/President Daw,
I am a SCCM alumni but didn't serve under President Daw. He, however, served as my bishop upon my return home from my Mission, while I stayed with the Barney Family in Murray. Bishop Daw and I grew close due to our mutual love for the great people of South Carolina as well as the gospel. He was also my bishop as I was able to be sealed for time and eternity to my sweetheart Jill in the SLC Temple. Bishop/President Daw was a man with an amazing Christ-like countenance. I am thankful for his leadership and influence in my life. Our prayers are with you and your family during this time of mourning and rejoicing for him.

Dear Daw Family,

Your father was truly a great man who inspired and had important influence on everyone around him, both members of his church and more importantly many "outsiders".

It is rare in Utah society that an LDS church leader can have such broad influence both within and outside the church, but J. Weston did just that.

I did not know it at the time, but 35 yrs ago he helped to finance my mission which totally changed the direction of my life, leading to a great wife and two wonderful children and a very rich life.

When I look back and consider the main influences of my early life, J. Weston was defintely one of them and I want to thank you all for sharing your father with me and many others who lacked a strong father figure in their lives.
