Our beloved Husband, Dad, Grandpa, Great-Grandpa, Brother, Friend and Teacher, passed away May 16th surrounded by his family, after a 6-year battle with Colon Cancer. Never once letting it get the upper hand; mentally outwitting it, and baffling his doctors for those 6 years.

Dad was born Dec. 2, 1928 in SLC, UT. to William Leroy, and Myrtle Irene Shepherd. Married Lyn Wallace, Sept. 29th 1949; was a life long resident of Murray. Graduated from Murray High in 1947.

Dad grew up in a large family; his Dad, William passed away when his 6 children were quite young. Myrtle remarried Gunnard Anderson who had 5 children; all 11 children were close family for life.

Dad loved and enjoyed his family and kept them close. Ken and Lyn had 6 children, 14 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. In his early years, he worked for his Dad’s construction business and then worked for and retired from Mtn. Bell/ USWest.

He is survived by his wife, Lyn; six children, William (Linda), Sherie (Henry), Debra, Patricia (Craig), Joseph, and Greg (Lilah); brother, Shirl; sister, Joyce; many neices, nephews, and friends. Preceded in death by mother, Myrtle; both father’s, William and Gunnard; brothers, Don, Obie, Brent, and Clinton; sisters, Luana, Beverly, Janice, Marilyn; and many friends. A very special thanks to Frankie who started out as his nurse, lovingly caring for him for six years and became a part of our family, and his wonderful brother Shirl, (who had to give his final blessing many times.)

Funeral services will be Friday, May 21, 2010, at 12 Noon at the Little Cottonwood LDS Chapel, 6180 S. Glen Oaks. A viewing will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday evening at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 So. State Street, and at the church from 11-11:45 a.m. on Friday prior to the service. Interment: Murray City Cemetery.

December 6, 2008 - Susan Berg Porter passes. Susan Berg Porter oldest daughter of Robert S. Berg and Mary B. Kent passed away on Saturday December 6, 2008. Susan had courageously battled cancer twice in her life. She is survived by her husband David Porter along with son Jonathan and daughter Jamie. No funeral services are planned.

September 23, 2007 - Arnold Berg's Personal History - The personal history of Arnold Berg has been scanned from it's original format (11 x 17 geneology style sheets) into an electronic format. His history is now available for review by family members (spelling grammar and content). Please review the document and provide corrections to Reed Haslam. Family members who have other histories in electronic format and would like them posted on the web site are invited to send them too Reed.

September 22, 2007 - The 4th bi-annual Berg Family Reunion was held today at Lone Peak Park in Sandy, Utah. Many thanks go to Kathy Grotepas who was chairperson for this reunion and her sisters and brothers who assisted her. They had done much work in preparing a theme, dinner and many fun activities for Berg family members who joined in the event. They also paid for the location, decorations, and the main course for the meal. Many thanks to Clifford and Grance's children for preparing a wonderful afternoon for the entire family.

March 2007 - Steven Morgan son of Gary and Rosemary Morgan completed his PhD in Physics at the University of Utah and moved to New Jersey to do post doctoral work at Priceton, University.

June 27, 2006 - Jeffrey K. Berg, son of David and Marie Berg returned home after serving in the Costa Rica, San Jose mission.

March 29, 2006 - Michael Haslam received his mission call to serve in the Santa Rosa California Mission. He departs on June 7, 2006. HIs great-grandfather John H. Haslam built chapels in the Santa Rosa area in the late 1940's. We understand that the building still exists, but is nolonger owned by the church. Read the latest news from Michael's mission.

September 23, 2005 - Scott W. Morgan and Shalynn Edwards were married at 10:55am in the Salt Lake LDS temple. Scott is the son of Gary and Rosemary Morgan. Scott and Shalynn live in the Los Angeles California area.

September 17, 2005 - Berg Reunion 2005 was held at the home of J. Weston and Beverly Daw. See the photographs. The next Berg reunion will be in 2007.

May 26, 2005 - Remy and Lynn (daughter of Hugh and Sylvia Atchley) Van der Put announce the birth of a daughter Kathryn Anne Van der Put. Kathryn joins her sister Jocelyn and brother Ryan as the 3rd child in the Van der Put family.

Verna Berg Probst and Belle Sanders found the Bakke family farm in Norway when they visited Norway in the summer of 1955. The family relatives had changed their name to Bakke which was the name of the hill in the area.

February 23, 2005 - In semi-final judging held at Brighton High School Michael Dean Haslam was selected one of 15 finalists in Mathematics in the KSL Deseret News Sterling Scholar awards program for 2005. Michael was selected from among 50 other nominees in the category of Mathematics. Final judging is on March 9th at Alta High School. The winners will be announced on March 30th at Cottonwood High School at the 44th annual sterling scholar awards program.

February 3, 2005 - Angela Haslam is selected to the Academic All-Stake girl's basketball team for class 5A. She will receive the award just prior to the girl's 5A state championship basketball game on February 26 at Salt Lake Community college. Last October she was named a member of the Academic All-State team for girl's volleyball.

Katherine Boren, 16, a student at Boise High School, achieved a perfect score on her SAT exam. In addition to studying, she enjoys baking and hunting.

A shy hunter. A gregarious singer. A busy swimmer. It's college application season, and these three local high school students received perfect scores this year on national college entrance exams.

Days before Christmas, the Statesman profiled Tynan Smith, a Boise High School student who scored perfectly on the SAT I and PSAT.

Parents and a high school counselor stepped forward and told The Statesman about other students who got perfect scores.

Two of them — Katherine Boren, a junior at Boise High School, and Margaret Ellsworth, a senior at Timberline High School — scored perfectly on the SAT I: Reasoning Test this fall. A third, Diana Ye of Timberline, got a perfect score on the ACT.

A total of 3,740 Idaho high school students took the SAT I: Reasoning Test or an SAT II Subject Test, according to the College Board. Both tests are used in college applications. The SAT I test is split into a verbal and a math portion, with the highest for each being a score of 800.

Of all the students who took the test in Idaho, only 50 scored a 750 or higher on the math portion, according to the College Board. That means far fewer could have received a perfect 1600.

Boren, 16, achieved that feat. She "likes to take standardized tests for fun," her mom, Joan Boren, says. "She just came this way."

Katherine Boren enjoys the exactness of science and took a senior's calculus class with her sister, who is three years older. She's shy about having her picture taken. But there's more to the teen than that.

She bakes — her brioche proves quite tasty — and hunts. She shot a bear months ago and served it up at what the family called a "bear-becue."

Ellsworth, who also got a 1600, said she pursues singing as much as she can. The 18-year-old had to work with her high school career counselor to squeeze advanced choir classes into her schedule, which already bulged with other advanced courses.

The discovery of her SAT score went a little something like this: "I went on the Internet and checked the score and I was like, those numbers, those are the same. They're not supposed to be the same," she said. "I called my mom right after I found out the score ... She let out a shriek that almost busted my ear on my side of the phone."

Then her mom proceeded to tell everyone around her at a school carnival about the score, Ellsworth said. No other Boise, Nampa or Meridian public school reported a perfect SAT score. But Vicki Wimer, Ellsworth's career counselor at Timberline High School, wanted to recognize a student who got a perfect 36 on her ACT exam, another popular standardized test for college-bound students.

Ye, a 16-year-old senior who skipped the second grade, scored perfectly on the ACT in June. She wants to study pre-med at the best university she can attend.

"I hope it helps," Ye says. "It certainly can't hurt." Ye appears to be of the over-achieving stripe. She's on the swim team and in the marching band. She got into a special MIT program over the summer and studied vision neuroscience, or how the brain processes what people see.

But, "I'm also kind of a slacker, too. I'm an overachieving slacker," Ye says. "If I push myself to do it, then I will. If I don't, I'll just stay at home and be lazy."
